A career in business development can enhance your skills. These are my 3 reasons to work in business development.
Ten years ago I moved my first steps into a career in business development and it has been an amazing journey so far.
To be honest, I didn’t really imagine myself in such a field. I wanted to become a journalist and then a diplomat. I definitely didn’t see this coming.
However, my career in business development really allowed me to learn a lot about myself, my capabilities, and how I could use my skills to deliver value.
The beauty of business development is that it really obliges you to think out of the box and find creative solutions to business problems.
There are a lot more than 3 reasons why you should choose a career in business development.
But I’m sure that these ones, will definitely convince you to give it a try or to find a new meaning to what you’re currently doing.
A career in business development uncovers your skills
One of the things I’m most amazed about is that working in business development really helped me uncover a lot of skills I didn’t even know to have.
The first thing I liked about business development is that I always felt so important being on the phone trying to help people with my solution.
It was like in a movie, a sort of Wolf of Wall Street Italian version!
I then learned I was gifted of empathy and that helped to understand my clients and eventually reach my business goals.
A few years later, I learned that I was particularly good at spotting opportunities. I noticed that in any situation, I would always come up with a solution that made sense.
Wow, I found out that I was very good at problem-solving. Not too bad for someone that was really bad at math as a kid!
Then came the time in which I was stressed out by not being able to reach my goals. I would always get really impatient and annoyed.
So I learned I was capable to evaluate situations objectively and work to improve myself and my job.
The point is that my career in business development really highlighted some aspects of my personality that I had. But never really used!
I believe each one of us has some hidden talent. Unfortunately though, we don’t always have the chance to experiment with them.
This happens because too many times we’re stuck in tiring routines. We don’t get enough challenges and this frustrates us.
This is not the case in business development.
You never get bored if you work in business development
This is definitely in my top 3 reasons to choose a career in business development. I consider myself a multi-tasker and I can’t see a better fit than this.
Working as a business developer challenges me every day with something new. One day I’m busy calling all day, while the day after I’m attending an event.
I get the chance to work on many different projects and get to know many different people. Basically every day I can do something completely different than the day before.
During my last job, I was part of both the sales and growth team. I was busy contacting prospects, but also organizing webinars, working on email marketing and more.
The variety involved in business development is something I find extremely valuable. Especially because it grants me a lot of flexibility.
Now, the ones of you working in sales development might argue that it’s not exactly like this. That after all, what you do is just call and send emails.
This is true to a certain extent. Maybe the task itself is always the same, but you’re calling different people every time.
And we all know that every person is very different from the other. So it’s our conversation with them. You will need to adapt every pitch to the new person
I find this very fascinating. Every day as an occasion to learn something new, to meet new people and to constantly challenge my intellect.
Last more practical point, is that working in such a fast-paced environment obliges you to discover new must-have tools so that you can be more efficient. And this is always a plus!
You are the front man of your company
If you choose a career in business development, you prepare yourself to become the front man of your company.
You are the first person your clients and partners see and whatever you say can make or break a deal.
Under this perspective, working in business development brings a lot of responsibility.
You’re usually performing the most profitable activity in the company.
Which means that if you work well you’re directly responsible for generating growth opportunities for your organization.
Besides, by experimenting and always being in contact with your audience, you’re in the perfect position to suggest your company what would be ideal to do.
This doesn’t always happen unfortunately as business development is often associated with entry-level positions.
However, if you work long enough in a company, you earn the right to steer a company’s direction based on your findings on the field.
Last, if you work in a small organization, your role will be naturally very strategic. This can position yourself as a key stakeholder from a very early stage.
It wasn’t the case for me at the very beginning as I was working for a large corporation. I just didn’t have much space to experiment.
So I understood that my place was more in startups and fast-paced environments. In this way, I was able to have a bigger impact on the growth of the company.
I especially like small companies, because in this way I have the chance to work on many different aspects of the business. This is really something that helped me step up my game.
Regardless of the type of company you chose, a career in business development can skyrocket your professional life and bring you a lot of satisfaction.
