Ever wondered what your true calling is? Well, here’s a sneak peek of how to uncover your true calling for business development. To penetrate and excel in this super-energetic field, here is more by those who know it best.
I’m Ashish Tiwari, business development manager at CocoonIT and working in the field for 7 years already. Over the years I learned on my skin what it takes to be a successful business development pro. Now I want to share how I found my passion for my job and how you can find it too!
So if you’re struggling and questioning your career choice, I’ll give you some tips to start loving your job again.
How did I uncover my calling for business development?
You know you have it in you, if you’re sharp, dynamic, and love talking to people! “Sales or Business Development could be a great fit for you”, said my training & placement officer during my final year of engineering back in 2012. That is when I first encountered the term Business Development and it caught my attention like a ray of sunshine.
Upon further probing, he said that I would get to work in a role where each day involves helping various types of customers or working with different products. Here, the results of my efforts would be very tangible, in both quotas and commissions.
Needless to say, I got more and more absorbed into the concept of Business Development. It grabbed my interest, and trust me, till today it refuses to let go of me!
Further, I was told that to successfully break into Sales or Business Development, I would have to be able to sell myself as the best person for the job or assignment. To help me out, he asked me to go through various books and articles on the subject. As a result of this, I found what my calling is into, and decided to stay inclined to it.
It’s OK to not know !
If you feel like you’re the weirdo that doesn’t know what to do with their career, you’re definitely not alone. The reality is: a lot of us don’t know what we want to be. And that’s OK.
However, what I knew as a fresh graduate is that I’ve got unique skills that needed nurturing and exposure in the real world. Those skills were collaborative work ethic, strong communication skills, ability to lead, sales mindset, strategic thinking, little business and industry knowledge.
What was my first job like, and what did I discover myself?
Let me tell you, how I uncovered my calling and how it works for me. In continuation to my studies I picked up a job with a Canadian bank as a customer support officer which allowed me to help out the Canadian folks with their respective banking Technical/Non-technical issues.
Here, I mastered various People skills like ability to listen, to communicate and to relate to others on a personal or professional level. Further to extend, it included problem-solving abilities, empathy for others and a willingness to work together toward the common good. This role was my foundation to start my customer focused journey.
What was my first graduate job like, and what got me thinking?
Now after my graduation as an Electronics engineer, the first job that I got out of college was for an ATM (Automated Teller Machine) manufacturing firm as a Sales & Service Engineer. This was a techno-functional role and I was responsible for handling Pre – installation, Installation, Training, Preventive Maintenance, Troubleshoot, Break Down maintenance, Customer Interaction, Customer Relationship building.
That got me thinking: how can I best contribute to my new team, the revenue team? I had so many ideas for implementing growth opportunities in a sustainable and profitable way but I was helpless in that position. So I decided to look for a role that would allow me to do that.
When and how I found that THIS IS MY HOME, and I belong here?
It was crystal clear to me what I wanted and started working on my business development skills to pursue my passion. Fortunately, I got picked up by one of the industry leaders into the Software Testing space as a business development trainee, and the expected roller coaster ride began.
Since then, it has been an amazing journey! The things that I love most about Business Development are forming relationships that provide value to the customer, solving real business issues they are facing, and learning to ask the right questions. Being curious is pretty much the best qualifying skill you can have if you want to be a successful business development professional.

Navigating your career can be challenging, especially if you’re hitting some bumps and you’re not sure anymore about your choice. So here my tips to help you uncover your calling for business development
1 – Consider your worth, more than your resume
In many organizations, candidates are considered for the job based on their skills and talents, rather than just their degrees and certificates. So, unleash your true potential by honing your inherent skills in Business Development.
2 – Don’t confuse a job with a purpose
Your job can be your passion, but not your purpose in life. Try to find your real purpose in life, and strive to fulfill it by pursuing your passion. A career in business development can allow just that!
3 – Seek support, not tolerance
If you get stuck on the job at any time, do not hesitate to ask your seniors or co-workers. Getting your query resolved and working with better understanding is better than testing your seniors’ patience.
4 – Give yourself permission to change your mind
Every day brings you the opportunity to learn something new. So, it is very important to expand your horizons and operate with a flexible mind.
5 – Seek the people you actually like
With business development, you can do anything but hide from yourself. This role requires you to stay agile. This you can do, by keeping identifying what you really like, so that you waste no time with what you dislike. The same applies to individuals whom you choose as your go-to person!
6 – Blend your talents
If you have been selected for the role, it means you have it in you. So, allow your talent to blend well with your personality & skills.
7 – Do not follow someone else’s dream
You have found your calling in a specific field. Eureka! That’s your greatest achievement so far. Now, it’s your own dream to begin with. And end with, as well!
8 – Find a problem to solve
People like you because you always have a solution to their problem. So, what will you do when there is no problem? This is your expertise as a Business Development Professional, to identify people’s problems and to offer a solution for them.
9 – Say Yes to Odd opportunities
To stand out, you need to think and offer solutions which are out of the box! Go berserk, but never consider any opportunity to be unfruitful. You never know what can lead to where. So, take up any suitable opportunity that comes your way.
10 – Ignore the future, deal with the present
Tomorrow can be thought of tomorrow, but never compromise on your today! Give your best today, and wait for rewards later. This is the mantra of Business Development.
So, ready to embrace your career?
A career in business development can be very rewarding, yet very challenging and moments like this, where you’re not sure anymore, will keep happening. One day you might feel on top of the world, the day after, without confidence at all, but that’s part of the game.
